Roth Mobot was retained by Trek Studios to design and manufacture the electronic "insides" for the 2009 TCF / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition awards. This year's top nine docs were selected from 240 entries, from ten different countries, and range in topic from tales of love, betrayal, and identity, to the strange science of coincidence. There was also one 2009 Audio Luminary Award.
Michael chupich, of Trek Studios, housed the electronics in hand cast replicas of retro radios. Each radio is covered with a veneer of a particular wood that was imported from Africa.
Each award contains an array of yellow LEDs, a hacked sampler circuit containing an excerpt from that particular recipient's documentary, and a custom home made circuit that work together to produce three modes of operation; Normal, "Bent," and Synthesizer. The control knobs are for On/Off volume, Mode, Bent Speed, and Synth Frequency.
The 10t radio, the Audio Luminary Award, contains a sample of a custom drone created by Roth Mobot called "chip 10." It can be heard in it's prototype form at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9v0lb1y00E
