Faut être taré pour installer le bureau le plus lourd d'Ubuntu sur la PS3 mais bon.

actually, if i use mp4, i can import the files into after effects and magix movie edit pro, so if i ever export to mkv, i actually encode to mp4 then put it in an mkv container (cause megui makes timecode errors) mp4 is most convinient over multi OS workstations anyway. ill be using it in college and in my proffesion. but in any case, ill just get a deskside proccessor. kinda expensive, but whatever i can use

yo nice i wanted to ask does this ver of linux support win32 and win64 apps?
i subtitle videos and wanted to use my ps3 as an encoder (have it run a program called MeGUI), simply because of the processor and ram its got.
ive got 4gb ram and a 2.4GHz proc., but i wanna cut time
thanks!

to support win32/win64 apps support lets say used trough Wine is a no-go. You'd need x86 architecture cpu for that, while Cell in PS3 is a PowerPC architecture.
Theoretically, you can use Qemu, emulate an x86 machine and install Windows on it. But I have tried it and it feels like 90Mhz Pentium. Even running Windows98 on that is not exactly smooth and I had to turn off face animations in Starcraft to to make it stop stuttering :) Pre-1999 2D games could work fine, maybe some very basic stuff.

Not sure about requirements on subtitling stuff, but you'll be probably better off with your 4gb ram 2.4Ghz machine: PS3 actually has only 256MB RAM which is.. well, many Linux distros have problems just running on that these days. Though its a 3.2Ghz ram, I doubt it would have any impact on it's lacking.

The CPU is 3.2 Ghz and yeah it has like 7 cores, but only one of them is PowerPC arch. The other ones are something Cell-specific and only programs written specifically for Cell will be able to access their processing power. Also, since there is no graphics acceleration available while running linux on PS3 and it is all computed trough the CPU (and you can really see how it strangles with rendering the GUI on KDE4), yoll'be almost certainly better off with whatever you have.

hmmm...lots of stuff goin on. thats shocking, 256mb of ram? its just that i dont wanna have to learn how to work a solaris lol my friend in canada uses a super cluster computer he built and he can encode a 24 minute anime ep in 15 minutes. mine takes about an hour, and release times are getting more and more immediate :/ meh whatever ill get a 'deskside' or something ( ; _ ;)

that sounds pretty neat. I have no idea how ps3 performs with encoding, but if you'll fetch my some data and how-to, I might go and try it. Though kickass performance ain't something I would anticipate.
I suppose that right nVidia CUDA tool should be the fastest solution. However thats just my guess, I have no idea if such tool even exists :)
Which reminds me - you make avi hardsubs rather than putting them into mkv?
