I re-posted this old favorite with my own English translation. Not word for word, but I believe with the essence the original lyricists intended.
For me this is the most powerful and heartfelt performance of this song.
My liberal English translation of the original French lyrics by J. Néro / G. Péram 1971
This is the story of a truce I had asked for,
This is the story of a light I had hoped for,
This is the story of a love I thought lived
This is the story that one day me, a small child,
Wished happiness for the whole planet.
Wished and hoped that peace would reign as master on this Christmas Eve.
But everything stayed the same. but everything stayed the same. But everything stayed the same.
Chorus:
No, no, nothing changed. Everything, everything stayed the same.
No, no, nothing changed. Everything, everything stayed the same.
Hey hey. Hey hey.
And however many people sing with us.
And however many people kneel together,
To pray. Yes to pray.
To pray. Yes to pray.
I see everyday on television,
Even on Christmas Eve, guns, cannons.
I cry. Yes I cry.
I cry, who can explain this to me:-
Chorus:
.
Me, I think of the child surrounded by soldiers.
Me, I think of the child who asks why?
Each time. Yes every time. Each time. Yes every time.
Me, I think of all this, but I should not.
All these things, do not show me.
And that is why. Yes and that is why. And that is why
I sing, I sing :-
Chorus:
This is the story of a truce I had asked for,
This is the story of a light I had hoped for,
This is the story of a love I thought lived
This is the story that one day me, a small child,
Wished happiness for the whole planet.
Wished and hoped that peace would reign as master on this Christmas Eve.
But everything stayed the same. but everything stayed the same. But everything stayed the same.
Chorus x 2
No, this is not live. The song's original soloist would be about 16 by the time this was broadcast. There have been a few "stand-in's" since 1971! The sound of the vocals is exactly the same as the 1971 recording. Little boys do not sound that much alike!

@mannekin There is no doubt that this is not the sound of the original soloist (Bruno, I believe). This doesn't even closely resemble the sound of the original. The only other sound like this one is on their Mercredi Libra album.

Thank you for uploading this video. I remember when this song was first aired in the Netherlands. I was still young so I did not understand the real meaning. Looking at the world today the words in this song still hold true. Considering that we are now 40 years further in time, it make me so very very very very sad that we still have not learned anything. My compliments for the translation, it is perfect.!!!

@nlco0196 Thank you for this nice compliment. The continued truth of these words is why I have posted this one. Not to mention the emotion these two soloists pour into it.

Their dubbing was good, but all dub,all credits to bruno´s interpretation
But still very expressing boys, today the world suffers from lack of expression on music

@GabrielDhalaman For some reason this, and many other, videos seem to loose sync with their audio when played from you tube. So dubbing is very difficult to determine for sure.
