This is Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm a-ning". Far from being drunk or stoned, this is three musicians having fun and playing musical pranks on each other - just like Thelonious used to do (also play 'odd' or 'out of tune' notes and phrases on purpose).
BTW you can't play at this level if you're stoned or drunk, so don't even go there. This was always the last number of the set on this tour and they did a similar thing with it every night.

John is waiting for inspiration from the band, I 'm pretty sure the bassist is stoned as is the drummer.John is drug free and teetotal and is clearly frustrated. Who can blame him!!! HaHa, HoHo, never mind John Jazz is full of 'em. morons. Christmas is here!! John is a great guitarist, I've had the pleasure of playing rythm for him in '88, and he is a fantastic musician.
