Congrats to Barack Obama. Even if we're going to hear it over and over, it's true—this is a historic moment. That an African-American has a better than even chance to be the next president of the United States is an amazing thing—and heartening about this country's capacity for progress. Also, on a more mundane level, Obama out-campaigned, out-fundraised, out-strategized, out-classed, and—yes—out-spun the Clintons. What a campaign. He and his team should be very proud.

I doubted he could pull it off. But two prescient pieces of punditry stuck with me throughout this process, both on Meet the Press. Mike Murphy said long ago that if Hillary lost, it would be because she ran up against a guy with exactly the right message for this particular moment in time, and there'd be nothing she could do about it. The other was Tim Russert himself saying if Obama won Iowa, watch out, because he's a thoroughbred and would be off to the races (as it turned out, he wasn't really off to the races until February). Obama has been wheezing at the end here, but he's going to get a high-octane infusion of glowing press coverage that will probably bump him up into a nice lead over McCain

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who has made history by capturing the Democratic White House nomination as the first black candidate atop a major-party ticket, has paid tribute to rival Hillary Clinton. Senator Obama's calls of hope and change, in a country wearied by the Iraq war and stalked by fears of recession, ended a 16-year era of Clinton family dominance over the Democratic Party. He has prompted US newspapers headlines about the man who "broke racial barriers," in a "major milestone for the nation".

In the frenzied end-game, Senator Clinton has said for the first time she may be ready to serve as Senator Obama's vice-president, in a phone call with law-makers from her New York state, a staffer with the New York delegation told AFP.
But Senator Clinton has refused to conceded defeat, fuelling speculation that she will continue her fight all the way to the Democratic Convention in Denver in August. Senator Clinton has demanded respect for the nearly 18 million people who voted for her and is leaving no doubt that she considers herself the best potential president. She congratulated Senator Obama on an "extraordinary" race but said: "The question is, where do we go from here, and given how far we've come and where we need to go as a party, it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight."

She asked her supporters to give her advice via her website, where visitors can send any message as long as it is prefaced with the words: "I'm with you Hillary and I'm proud of everything we are fighting for". Senator Obama says the 60-year-old New York senator has made history herself. "She's a leader who inspires millions of Americans with her strength, her courage and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight," he said to 19,000 supporters packed inside the stadium in St Paul. "Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having had the honour to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton...America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past...Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,"

  • Obama the first half-caste biracial mixed-race president not black.

  • white nation...that speaks volumes.

    Assholes!

  • "A White Nation"? This country was never a white nation. It was brown with color of the Natives. Then came the arrival of slavery that made it a non-white nation 2-1 (Natives and Blacks - Whites). When was this ever a just white nation?

  • Vote for mccain so we can have Hillary in 2012

  • Hillary Clinton is one piece of work! Her arrogance is infuriating. I hope and pray Barack Obama does not extend the V.P. to her. It would be a disaster!

  • obama ftw
