Children of war, the boys and girls of Afghanistan grin into the lenses of the combat photographers. Tiny flowers, blooming in a harsh and desolate landscape, these children are a testament to the human spirit and the power of endurance.
Born into a world of incomprehensible madness and violence, their beauty profoundly affects everyone who sees them. They have never known a world without privation and suffering. Irrepressible, inescapable, these children are everywhere.
I do not take sides. No less human, no less vulnerable, each combat photographer and soldier who brought these images from bedeviled Afghanistan is also someone's child. They come from many nations: Sweden, Norway, Canada, France, not only America. They have borne witness to this tragedy, this black comedy: they have done what they can, in impossible circumstances.
Now you must bear witness in your turn: it is no less your duty. Do not forget the children of Afghanistan. They are your children, too.

Somehow after all this crap, I have a feeling that Afghanis will rise and take up their role as a deserving superpower in the not-so-distant future. Hang in there kiddos..

@arzgania Afghanistan is a made-up country, deeply divided, a collection of tribes and clans deeply suspicious of each other. They are not so much a superpower, growing up to a mighty tree. They are more like a humble weed, growing where nothing else will. The harder they are plucked, the hardier they become. They are astonishing people. I knew them in the refugee camps of Pakistan and in Kabul 2002.
