In 1993 some bright spark hit on the idea of using two old (about to be phased out) class 20 engines to power the weekly Saturday Excursion to Sunny Skeggie. It was an enormous hit with the rail enthusiasts and the seasiders loved it as well. The train started at Leicester, stopped at Nottingham to pick up and proceeded to Skegness where it stayed all day, returning about 6.00pm

  • Blimey, I can see good old Nottingham Goods Yard box under the bridge. I almost signed for that one :)

You mean you nearly signed on for the box?

  • @balmesh Yup! Didn't get enough hours in to sign though. Traffic was so sparse that I never got to handle a single train and refused to sign for it until I had. It had some weird and wacky methods of working where you had to know how to work well with the chargehand/shunters

  • To madmax200769

Yes, I get the picture. "Adopt our methods or leave" - find it everywhere, but not usually in safety-critical situations.

  • @balmesh Mmmmm... Not as such. The layout wasn't really made for the use as a parcel's depot. The box was originally a terminus box for the mainline Nottingham GNR Low Level station. It comprised almost entirely of shunting manoevres but you had to understand the shunting methods and methods of working of the chaps there. Shunting can be a dodgy business at the best of times, esp. if the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I need to finish my slideshow and put on YT

    Thanks, anyway.

Thanks for writing. I t was a great time when you jump on a train like this for Skeggie!

  • I love going on trains to Skeg Vegas! It is a great place. I prefer these and other older trains to the new trains (e.g. East Midlands Trains) I don't care how long it takes though - it is worth the wait! :)

Well I hope you enjoyed the trip. We had travelled up from Hampshire to see it, so were very relieved that it was as advertised.

  • There's a good chance I was on this train with my Grandfather (now sadly passed away). It looks exactly like the train we took. Happy memories indeed!

Oh, and no...I didn't get to see the sea - it was MILES out!
