It's tough. You love them. You want to get them something. But what makes a good gift for a hoarder?

  • shopping cart is nice

  • Woodchipper, right?

  • I never get him anything, however recently I filled a nice photo album, which he really enjoyed!! I'd rather give him a dump truck to haul away all of his junk!

A restaurant meal is a great idea, but he refuses to eat in restaurants or take a vacation or see a film.

  • lol! My step-mom gets agitated when you talk about putting her 1000's of pictures in an album before she can go through them (she hasn't gotten around to it in 12 years I guess).

My little sister managed it though.

  • I would think getting a hoarder a gift is like giving an alcoholic a bottle of wine. However...

Perhaps movie or show tickets or like someone else mentioned, spa treatment. A service is better than a thing.

  • People just don't get me anything anymore. Not getting storage containers is a smart idea. That'd be like getting a box of slim fast to your overweight friend.

  • Some of my relatives have become horders since they moved from Mexico, where they had very little, to New York, where they have access to anything they want.

As a gift for them, I usually get containers for them to stow the junk they like to hoarde.

  • Garbage Bags!!!!!

  • I take them out to Karaoke, it makes us bond, and then they trust me more when I seperate their things. I've also done minigolf, gokarts, and boardwalk pier rides, they're things I like so even though I am angry with them it is hard for me to not enjoy myself, anything else like dinner etc. we usually begin to fight

  • Gift certificate for a day spa.

  • I think most people in the US, even non-hoarders, have too much stuff. I often given donations to charities that are important to people or close to their interests. You've said your sister has lots of activities that she's involved in. Could you give to something related to that? If she does art, give to a place that does free art classes for low income kids, for example. The newspaper subscription comment was just too funny. There's always the edible, truffles, fancy cheese, etc.

  • I watched some of your other videos too. My boyfriend has just moved into my parents' house where I live as well. The 'spare room' has recently been tackled with the help of him; the normal outsider. We threw out 4 bags of garbage, and gave 3 more bags and a fishtank to Salvation Army. It is definitely a disease; part learned (children of the 50's w/ Great depression parents, and part A.D.D.) My Grandma used to put sheets over the piles of junk. And she'd say "let me clear the bed off..." wow.

  • A home made good old mix cd with her favorite songs on it. Everyone always gives her crap like you mentioned. She cried when I gave it to her and she always talks about it, 3 years later. Still listens to it on the subway every day. Surprising huh?

  • Gilliganox morphed into Hocsoin........I decided that I am the family photographer and I started my own family album, which my parents(80 & 85) really enjoy.....too bad the hoarding continues....
