I did a paper on Dien Bien Phu at Dept of War Studies at King's College London. The French fought like fucking demons and contested every inch of that ground against impossible odds. The best film on the subject ever made!!!

@Redcoat66 To be honest I think the US failed from the start - the French held more currency than the Americans in Vietnam. At least there was a history of support for the French among the Vietnamese establishment, although obviously many ordinary Vietnamese understandably hated the French. The Americans were an unknown foreign entity, until they got involved in the war, then they became the enemy for any Vietnamese person who was anti-colonial or Communist. Always thought US foreign policy
