Performer - Deanna Durbin
Music - Ross Parker & Harry Par-Davies
Lyrics - Hugh Charles

This song was written in 1940, while England was going through its darkest days in WWII. The song became an instant patriotic hit.

At the time of WWII, Deanna Durbin was one of the most popular actresses in the world. The daughter of British parents, she was especially famous in England. One fan, Winston Churchill, would celebrate British military victories with screenings of Deanna Durbin movies. In 1942, the Odeon movie theaters in England had a week where nothing was shown but Deanna Durbin movies.

Another of Deanna's admirers was the Italian leader, Benito Mussolini. He wrote Deanna an open letter requesting that she ask President Roosevelt, on behalf of the youth of America, to stay out of WWII. Sadly for Benito, Deanna chose not to honor his request.

Though this movie was made in 1940, a year before America entered the war, Deanna chose to show her allegiance to her mother country with this special ending to "Nice Girl?", filmed exclusively for her British fans. This is also the one time in any of her movies that Deanna Durbin sang directly to the camera, meaning that she is singing this song not to the audience on screen, but instead to the audience in the movie theater.

  • @martynrobin121 The Brits were made of sterner stuff than the French. Adolf bit off more than he could chew.

  • @stephenbiboy I am an American and proud of my British roots, the Union Jack is the only other flag on earth I would even consider saluting.

  • @teto85 Adolph did not start war on Britain and made over 20 peace offers to Churchill. The war could have been ended the same year it began, before it turned into a world war killing 50 Million and causing countless tragedies on the continent, by over 14 Million civilains having to leave their own houses for good in Germany only - because Churchill expelled them.

    Recommendation:

"The Hess-Deception"; by British author Martin Allen (Harper-Collins, London UK). Quite an eye-opener.

  • @pieman97405 fight together

  • @goldieRocket too !

  • God Save Queen Elizabeth II!!!

  • Why does the comment section of songs such as this always have to be marred by a bunch of rascists?! Such a pity. My Great-Grandfather fought hard to bring down Hitler and Mussolini's Fascists and it wasn't so people could start spouting drivel about 'bringing back the empire' or a 'pure english race' (there is no such thing- we're pretty much a giant mix) and 'get the p***s out' Shut up and enlighten yourselves. Also, please learn to spell. I'm as working class as they come and I managed to!

  • @teto85 Uh no, the British were protected behind the English channel, without that they would have been conquered exactly like the French.

  • I wonder what King Arthur or Queen Victoria would have thought had they been around for the Battle of Britain.

  • awesome!!!!!!!!! yes because of this wonderful island freedom exists today......

  • Bring back our Empire and Churchill

  • I have one of Deanna Durbin's 78's!
