Written and directed by the Coen brothers (1996). Jerry Lundegaard is in a financial jam and, out of desperation, comes up with a plan to hire someone to kidnap his wife and demand ransom from her wealthy father, to be secretly split between Jerry and the perpetrators. Jerry, who is not the most astute of individuals, hires a couple of real losers from the frozen northern reaches of Fargo, North Dakota for the job. Then things begin to slip from bad to worse as Jerry helplessly watches on. Starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi.

  • Before this film came out I equated Minnesota with the feeling I get when opening my freezer door and I never cared for that much. I was in jail there once and the matron of the jail served me a bologna sandwich with butter on it. I had never seen anyone use butter like a spread on a sandwich before. That's about the most I remember about it. I did find their accents endearing though and apparently the coen brothers do as well.

  • @repetitivemotion I agree with you on that one. I am from Boston and the movie "Once Around" with Danny Aeillo, Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss took our accents a little far. Just comic effect, yet folks get their panties in a bunch.

  • you guys gettin your shorts in a bind because the movie has these crazy accents just kills me. lighten up! it's just a movie. the producers needed something to give the movie a regional feel so they over-did it with the accents. actually the women talking like they do is real cute...the girls in the bar and especially marge. if you go all aroung the USA you will hear different accents all over. thats not unique to the USA, it happens all over the world,

  • @FuttBucker667 Im not pissed about the accent comment, i was a little pissed about the "shitty backwater state" comment. Hence all of my comments declaring it not. I can laugh at myself, we DO talk like that, especially me for some reason and i never realized it til about two months ago when i moved away from minnesota

  • @armada113 yeah, i really dont care. and "FYI": i never said the accent was canadian, i said i dont get offended when some one makes fun of how the stereotypical canadian (me being canadian) speaks.

  • @bxfguif have you ever been to Hibbing? People DO talk like that. I was at the Burger King in HIbbing and the cashier's accent was so bad it sounded as if he was struggling with his English. haha

  • @FuttBucker667 FYI Minnesota and North Dakota have the highest number of millionares than any others state, so backwater it is not. Also Minnesota and North dakota are the 6th and 20th best educated states respectively. And they accent isnt a Canadian or Minnesotan accent, its a post-scandanavian accent, much like how New Yorkers come across as having an Italian accent from their ancestors. Also, Minnesota and ND were ranked 2 and 10 best states to live in, rescpectively. So much for "backwater"

  • I'm from Australia and these accents sound like your normal accents to me. The only American accent that stands out for me is the southern one.
