In this interview, at the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema (WFAC), Garri Bardin discusses his film "The Ugly Duckling". During the interview he refutes the rumours that it has been officially banned from broadcast in Russia, explains the musical influence of Tchaikovsky, and describes his process of acting out every part of the animation with the animators so they can realize his vision for the film.
When deciding on the musical score Mr. Bardin decided to narrow the selections down by using music from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and "The Nut Cracker". There are twenty-seven different Tchaikovsky arrangements in "The Ugly Duckling" and twenty-five of these have been rearranged to seem as if Tchaikovsky was writing directly for "The Ugly Duckling".
Garri also mentions that, although he thought he would never animate again after completing "The Ugly Duckling", he has found inspiration once more and is working another project. However, he was not willing to discuss the new animation project on camera... so you'll just have to wait to see what he has up his sleeve next!
