The date: May 23, 2002. Location: a lonely, local television soundstage - way out on Long Island. The occasion: The Baghdaddios' first and only appearance on the nationally-syndicated, MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network) television show: LT1.
Syndicated throughout the U.S. and in parts of other countries during the early-2000s, LT1 was a weekly, half-hour-long, pre-recorded television program featuring the best of New York's signed and indie/D.I.Y. talent, in the form of interviews, interspersed with live music performances. Long a mainstay of NY's Lower East Side and Williamsburg (Brooklyn) post-Ramones, indie and punk, underground "scene", The Baghdaddios - fresh off a packed house, much-heralded performance, earlier that month at famed punk rock birthplace, CBGB, trekked out to Smithtown and plowed through 4 tunes - all originals - and then sat with show host Dave Tyler for an impromptu interview. According to front man/lead singer, Kenn Rowell: "I think we came across pretty reserved. We had never taped a live performance in a studio before and we kept getting various stage directions like 'Slow down' and 'Pause and stare at the camera before you start your introduction - we'll edit it out later' - which, of course, they never did - so I looked like a deer caught in the cross-beams of a Peterbilt!".
Despite the reserved performance, the show gained the band much-needed cable TV exposure around the country and abroad, only helping to get their name "out there" to a much more broad audience. Looking back on the appearance, the band generally recognizes that this show helped garner their music rare interstate recognition outside of their NYC stomping grounds.
The song performed here, from their first album ("Willie Horton Hears A Who") is one of their more popular and heavily requested tunes: "Neil's In Rehab", which has received extensive airplay in the U.S. and abroad.
Band Lineup:
Kenn Rowell: vocal, rhythm guitar, songwriter
Paul Zlotucha: drums
Jim Ievolella: lead guitar
Tom Stubenvoll: bass
