The world of paying for college can seem like a foreign place with unfamiliar acronyms and terminology. Planning ahead and having a working knowledge of the "system" can put parents and students ahead of the curve.

Jim Kaster, W&L's Director of Financial Aid, will offer an overview of financial aid basics, including types of financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study). He will explain needs-based versus merit-based aid as well as the different kinds of loans. Common misconceptions and useful tips will be discussed.

Cathy Shaner Carlock, LPL Registered Representative, will offer information about the various programs administered by the Virginia College Savings Plan, including CollegeAmerica, the country's largest 529 plan.
