@llel11 Yeah don't get me wrong- lyrically you CANNOT top Ani...Playing the Guitar you CANNOT top ani..but vocally? Thats where Alanis mops the floor. Ani is in her own category...but I don't think it's too far removed from Patti Smith.

I think it's because ani is in her own category. she owns it, there is no one else in it.
alanis you could put in with tori amos and similar artists, she's got company in her section whereas ani is alone.
-
I love alanis but she is in no way in the same category as ani, ani plays and sings, alanis is a great writer but she didn't innovate a playing style.
-
And I hit the same brick wall...
Is there anything I can do
about anything at all?
Fantastic lyrics!

@rashedly uhh because other genius exist? I love both...but don't think a comparison is off the wall. Ani owns lyrically all the way. Alanis owns vocally- and isn't a bad writer herself but not on Difranco's level.

What an outrageous debate. We have one of each, and only one . What the fuck is the point of such a debate? This woman is a genius - are you listening? how do you listen to this and get lost in a conversation like this? Oh why do I read the comments, why.

I love Ani Difranco. One of the few artists unafraid to sing about what they feel passionate about. She's original and spunky and has so many incredible songs.
I love Alanis as well, I think they are both great artists, I don't understand why one must be classified as better than another. I think they are both spectacular artists who bring much needed sass and honesty to an otherwise repetitive and boring musical scene.

My opinion on the Ani vs. Alanis debate.
It doesn't matter, who's better, or who you like more. At the end of the day, there's Ani and there's Alanis and we can all be thankful that they both produced some very nice songs, that have helped people during different times in their lives.
No matter how strongly you feel about any issue, there will always be someone opposing you who feels as strongly.
I'm not saying you can't compare, it's just a waste of time. And terribly subjective.

not at all. it's funny when people who have obviously little to no knowledge of Alanis try to pitch in their opinion. Get an educated guess (Like the pun?). Listen to Uninvited, Citizen of the Planet, Baba,Still. It's personal, political ect. How is the comparison a joke? I may not agree with it- but to discredit Alanis...well at least be familiar with her work. Im familiar with Ani's and can actually have an opinion on it.
