Beyond the Pages of The Anarchist Cookbook
The Anarchist Cookbook is not an easy read. It gets straight to the point in a brutal and unforgiving fashion that doesn't really care if you like it or not. If you are the passive resister type, this is not the book for you. If you want a survival type guidebook that teaches you how to make many things that are both illegal and deadly, than you probably already have it. This anarchist cookbook has a reputation that precedes itself and for very good reason. It has been 30 years since its first publication and to this day the publishing world has seen nothing quite like it.
At 19 years of age, fresh out of high school, William Powell was not your typical Vietnam protester/ anti-Government activist. This kid wasn't all talk because he went a few steps further than your average hippie on a podium with a bullhorn shouting about what should be done. While that was happening, young William was at his typewriter writing about how it can be done and giving you the tools to do it with.
The first 30 pages gives the reader, the aspiring anarchist if you will, a look into the authors views on anarchy and how and why it can be used as an effective tool against governments that he felt were becoming more oppressive and secretive by the day. Some people might even consider this book a type of anarchist survival guide. This is the appetizer for the meal itself and, although the book as a whole can be a little hard to digest for some people, it starts you off easy with pot. From explaining what it is, how to grow it, cross-pollinate it, harvest it, de-seed it, roll it and smoke it.
If you don't think that is all that bad, remember this is chapter one. You can find detailed information throughout The Anarchist Cookbook about cocaine, heroin, how to convert a shotgun into a grenade launcher, how to make nitroglycerin and many other goodies for your friendly, neighborhood pharmacist. Keep in mind here that this kid was 19 years old in 1971. Not only did he not have a first hand working knowledge of the things he wrote about, but he did not have the luxury of a computer to research everything. Most of his research for this book was carried out at the New York City public library by pouring through volumes and volumes of research materials and then typing it out. He was serious about this.
Just so you know, the step by step guides on how to make various weapons and the dangerous chemicals used to make bombs actually work. This is an anarchist cookbook that actually works. Considering how long The Anarchist Cookbook has been made available to the public and what exactly is in the book, it is actually quite surprising in a good way that not a lot of harm, if any, has been inflicted that was a direct result of what was printed there.
It is widely believed at this point that this book is used as a type of defensive survival guide, as opposed to offensive, for people who believe the government will at some time try to oppress the people of the United States with force. It is not so much that the anarchist will use it, but rather the type of person who simply wants to survive in the event of military occupation.
It should be noted that the author, William Powell, is a Christian man who regrets he ever wrote the book. He really wishes that it would be taken out of publication, but since he sold the publication rights long ago that simply isn't his call to make. When you get right down to it though, whether you agree with what the book is about or what it stands for or not, you have to admit that it is a classic piece of American literature that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who is serious about literature.

@JayTee386 You live in the US and yet you think that this book should be banned? Do you have a single idea as to what the country is founded on and the rights that we have? It's also spelled with one N for ban.
