1999 World Junior Gold Medal Game Canada VS Russia AT WINNIPEG ARENA Part 10 / 10

WINNIPEG -- Artem Tschoubarov's second goal of the game at 5:13 of overtime gave Russia a thrilling 3-2 win over Canada on Tuesday in the gold medal game of the World Junior Championships. Tschoubarov sent a lightning snap shot from the left faceoff circle past the glove hand of Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo to bring a sudden end to the match. Maxim Balmotchnykh scored Russia's other goal. Bryan Allen and Simon Gagne tallied for Canada.

I was there. Talk about shocked, stunned silence. Canada, i think, was probably a little tired coming into this game as they had won a HARD earned win against the Czechs just a night or two before. The face that they were able to come back and tie this game spoke volumes for its determination.

It was a long, cold walk across the Polo Park parking lot after this game.

@ckendall67 That was the ESPN Classic re-broadcast that cut away. The original live TSN telecast showed it all. Notice the graphic says (c) 2004 when this game was in 1999.

This followed Canada finishing 8th the year before; they came awfully close to winning this Gold, but a heartbreaker for Canada indeed. Russians did deserve this Gold though, beating Canada on Canadian soil for the Gold, that takes GUTS :-)

Heat breaking, Canada didn't put a great team in this year.. Luongo was the only reason they were there.. in a way it was better when we had to fight for the WJHC.. more exciting anyhow...
