Supposedly the new sets basically bankrupted AW, so I don't know if they were worth it...

I loved this storyline. It was a great time for AW. Justine and Cecile on the same show was awesome. I also loved the crazy Marley storyline and I had been watching for years.

I agree. Jill did an awesome job on AW sets. They were looking bad. I think Jill did a great on AW. I liked Justine. I think if NBC had stayed out of it, it would have been better. NBC kept wanting AW to be DAYS. Even the earlier party of Justine before Jill got there was pretty good. Victoria Whyndam liked the concept at first.

Thank goodness Jill Farren Phelps revamped AW's production model and added all those new sets. AW was looking horribly produced before she got there.
I heard they were expensive, but I didn't hear they "bankrupted" the show. I'm sure P&G wouldn't have allowed that, considering how budget conscience they were. I think P&G just wanted out. There's a great interview with Victoria Whyndam online and she talks more about P&G just wanting to get out of the business and AW was their lowest rated show at the time. We saw what happened a few years later (GL and ATWT).

Vicky Wyndham didn't want Justine to turn into a gargoyle (her words). She wanted Justine to be disturbed, but to tell how she became that way. Instead, TPTB just did what they could to end it quickly.

I actually loved the arrival of Justine (when she was disturbed). The change of writers and EP in the middle of the story is what affected Justine. Carolyn Cullinton was HW and Jon Valente was EP. It was then changed with Tom King and Craig Carson as HWs and JFP as EP. Jill said NBC kept wanting her to do AW like DAYS. She didn't really agree with NBC and the direction they were taking AW in. That's why they fired her. She actually brought the demographics up for AW.

The mid-90s were the absolute worst days for AW. Except for Judy Evans as Paulina, Victoria Wyndham was the only real redeeming feature. Once Mac & Ada had died, nothing was ever the same. Had they brought backt he Matthews family and dispensed with the other nonsense, perhaps we'd have had the REAL AW again.

I thought there was some good stuff in the mid 90's. I agree it wasnt' the same though. The end of the 90's was the worst to me. Crazy Marly kidnapping Vicki all the way to Jordan Stark and Lumina. I do agree they should have returned to the Matthews. I'm sure Jaquline Courtney would have return as Alice. They could have then brought a grown up Kevin (Sally's son) and go from there. These excutive producers forget about the fans and their ego get in the way. They want it to become "their show).

Oh, the good ol' days of AW!!! Well, what were for me the good ol' days having only started watching the show in late '94. A lot of folks criticized AW in the late 90's but I tell you... this stuff holds up SO MUCH BETTER than the majority of what passes for "soap" now. Never should have been cancelled. Period.

I agree with you. I had watched AW since the mid 70's. The mid 90's was a good time in Bay City. I enjoyed the Justine storyline very much. I know a lot of people didnt' like it, but it's one of the most memorable stories (rather good or bad). I hated the crazy Marly story they did. Now that was awful. Having Marly turn on Vickie and lock her up in a room was so out of character of Marly.
