Why "Wanted: Monty Mole" Is Very Very Frustrating (Part 1)

I've been trying to play this ZX Spectrum classic and to be frank, I'm at the end of my tether. Jesus Christ.

This video will show you why. There are other playthroughs of this on youtube, but they're played by people who are ACTUALLY GOOD AT THE GAME and know the game well. I'm intending to show the common pitfalls and difficulties for the average player in trying to play this frustrating, near-unplayable impossible mess.

Man, if you think this is frustrating...

Let's just put it this way:

Without cheats or save states, Monty on the Run is in my opinion the hardest game ever created. Not one of the hardest— THE hardest. Tight controls, sporadic enemy patterns, a total of five lives, and a gamble item selection screen that can prevent you from completing the game.

@KomaruMedare Ah, yeah, I actually beat that one a while ago in a stream I did, but.... I didn't do it legitimately. I had a poke on for infinite lives (NOT the "enemies don't harm you" cheat, just infinite lives.) It was already frustrating enough. There was a girl watching the stream, though, that beat it LEGITIMATELY without any cheats. What a hardcore motherfucker.

Ah this brings it all back! Thankyou for putting this online, it made me laugh and cringe at the memories of playing all those zx spectrum platformers. Why did we put ourselves through it, hour after hour, time after time?

I used to have the likes of jet set willy, technician ted and manic miner, but I have to admit that monty mole was especially frustrating. It's taken me about 25 years to find that blue policeman's helmet going left and right was a goodie not a baddie! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah...

The problem is the kiddies nowadays are used to easy games. Grow some fucking balls and play the games we used to play without bitching.

Well, I actually just got the chance to play it today, I borrowed the C64 version from my friend. To be honest, it is quite fun, and it's not as hard as it is flat out bloody confusing at some points. I got stuck much more than I did in the other games. But there's a lot more assholish things the game throws at you, like powerups that reverse your controls, and platforms that force you to jump, which make for a lot of cheap deaths.

Fantastic music, though, I'll give it that.

In all seriousness, I can see how this was great for the time - I mean, I can't think of many speccy platformers I played that had good controls by modern standards. But that shit with the coal. There is no excuse. NO excuse.
