Richard Manuel and The Hawks, which would later become the rock group called "The Band", Preforming Georgia On My Mind in Port Dover 1964. This is beyond rare, and amazing to hear "The Band" in there beginnings. Richard gives the best performance i ever heard.

Richard Manuel - Vocal
Robbie Robertson - Guitar
Levon Helm - Drums
Rick Danko - Bass
Garth Hudson - Organ
Jerry Perfound - Saxophone

  • Do you have this entire show? Would love to get a copy if you do.

It's also amazing how different he sounds.

  • Ya, I got the complete show. I sent you a message with all the info. I couldn't believe it was him. His voice changed alot during his career .

  • I cannot thank you enough for this. I have been searching for this song from the Levon and the Hawks era FOREVER. Thank you so much.

  • It was just something i had, that would be wrong not to share with the world. And your very welcome!

  • The only version of Georgia I'd heard Richard doing was the SNL one...the way Levon raved about his singing voice in the book kept surprising me, but now I see where he was coming from...

  • @TheConneman I was probably at this show, Pop Ivey used to book them on Sunday nights, if I remember correctly!

Any info you can pass along, or songs, I love to get.

Thanks for posting this, Rick was a special talent and you were lucky if you got to hear him on stage.

But then they were all true musicians, not just noise makers.

  • @tdawg1294 Yes, I have all their albums, but Richard did a lot of "living" in those years before they ever recorded an album. I can only imagine what his voice was like in those early days, and luckily this 1964 recording is a glimpse. By the early 70s he was already using vocal tricks to cover up for his fading voice. The soul was still there even if the voice couldn't always make it work, no doubts about that.

  • @HagbardCeline42 do you listen to the band? how on earth were you surprised by Levon saying he had a great voice? you can listen to any song even when he's just dping harmonies it's earsex. COME ON MAN!

  • 7/12/64 some interesting dates. Ray C was turning 30 9/60 when he released his version. Richard was 21 the day of this recording and 33 in 1976.

  • @CodeOuch it wasnt a day off, at that time they had left Ronnie.

  • amazing

  • @donuntboy25

    alright.

    thanks for the info.

  • @CodeOuch it was their period between their time with ronnie hawkins and bob dylan

  • i have never heard them called Levon Helm and the Hawks... only Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks.

is that what thye called themselves if they did a show without Ronnie? or was it between being the hawks and the band?

  • So beautiful! Really, thanks so much for putting that up on Youtube.
