This year, our family will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $105 million.
Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people; a large and growing percentage of them children.
Charlotte was diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes nearly four years ago on Halloween. She used to take up to six insulin shots each day, but now wears an insulin pump that delivers insulin to her body 24 hours a day. And while it's much better...it is still NOT a CURE. In her six years of life, she has already had to go through over 13,300 finger sticks, 2,000 insulin injections, and 300 insulin pump site changes. In addition to that, everything she eats has to be weighed and measured first to figure out the carb content.
Our family is working toward our mission to help find a CURE for Charlotte and everyone else with Type 1 diabetes so that we can avoid the heart and kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and early death that is a reality for many people with juvenile diabetes.
There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime!
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
