Great Cellost, Great Human Being. Rest in Peace.

Rostropovich maestro de maestros :D

The violin solo feels rushed to me.
It doesn't quite have thati intimate taste after all that lyrical reflection.
Berlin's recording with Karajan does a much better job, but this one is great as well.

Actually, it really depends on the cellist. I find my vibrato to be best on my third finger.
-
@marzawilks Actually for almost every hand it will be 2nd finger
-
this is pure magic.

There is no set "best" finger to vibrato on. It all depends on what people are most comfortable with or what they themselves feel portrays the musicality the best in the moment.

@benjaros2 Aye, Rostropovich is a bit of an acquired taste sometimes (like so many cellists out there, for some reason :|), and i feel like he spurred on an entire generation who tries to vibrato like him XD
-
haha, different vibrato for different people. perhaps his widest vibrato was on his first finger

So powerful it rocks the soul, so beautiful it hurts ... He always gave 200% but here it's more like 2000! His ending at 5:39 - 6.01 is phenomenal. Oh Wow - I love him - wonderful Slava, rocking on in Heaven!!!
Elfinsafety, you're brilliant, thank you! Please, please post the 1st and 2nd mvts too.

He was the greatest cellist ever during his best playing years. When I heard him in those earlier years in London,he was a true cellist genius.
