Also I read that when you tap the end of the watermelon (either the end where the vine previously was, or the opposite end) it makes a certain noise like "think"
so "think" watermelons aren't ripe yet, "thank" watermelons are getting there, and "thunk" sounding watermelons are good and ripe. (This maybe be a method to use when the watermelon is still on the vine, though.

This is SOOOO true. my dad did the watermelon flick but they dont teach you and I swear I do it now in the store but I have no idea what I am listening for but I act like I know,lol! It is good to know I am not alone in this strange behavior.

the ripe water melon give deeper sound when you knock on it than the unripe one because the ripe one contain more watery cells
