About 3 octave scales, patterns and shifting. Hopefully you won't get stuck in 6th position and need a ladder to get back down.

The Galamian scale book I mention is Galamian/Neumann - Contemporary Violin Technique. I also mentioned his book on playing and teaching: the name is Principles of Violin Playing & Teaching. Other good scale books are Hrimaly and Flesch and a dozen or so others.

  • i was taught to shift with first finger on every G, so that is 1st position, 3rd and then 5th. are there different legal ways to do it?

  • @bachsxoxogirl - oh yes, several good possibilities, and a few crazy ones. You can do scales all 3-4-3-4 to work on pinkie strength too! Do it the way your teacher wants, and try alternates as extras.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCHHHH!!!! Now I know what to do so i won't get stuck when going back :D

  • @anonymuis - :-)
