A drunkard father redeems himself through his motherless 10-year-old son when he comes to live with him. The father works as a cleaner before a nightclub boss discovers his ability to perform painful magic.

Eric Khoo is making the Singapore film industry proud. Hi latest feature My Magic has been selected to compete at the Cannes Film Festival competition. It will be competing with 19 other entries for the Palme dOr.

Eric Khoo is estatic about this news and has stated that going to the main competition at Cannes is as good as competing in the foreign film category at the Oscars. Eric Khoo will be competing with Hollywood biggies like Clint Eastwood and Steven Soderbergh this year.

This is not the first time that Eric Khoo is attending the Cannes Film Festival. His previous three movies Mee Pok Man, 12 Storeys and Be With Me had made it big at the Cannes Film Festival. Be With Me was the opening film for Directors Fortnight at the festival.

2008年5月24日，第61届戛纳电影节正火热进行。昨日（5月23日）新加坡电影《我的魔法》举行了首映，导演邱金海亮相。

　　邱金海导演的《我的魔法》，讲述了有关爱情、孝道、偿还的生活故事。

　　邱金海凭借《我的魔法》成为首位入围戛纳电影节竞赛单元的新加坡导演，此前他的《12楼》和《和我在一起》都曾受邀在戛纳展出。邱金海是前新加坡首富邱德拔的十二个孩子之­一，曾在澳洲悉尼的城市艺术中心学习摄影，拍摄过多部短片、电视广告和音乐录影带，凭借《薄面佬》（1995）、《12楼》（1997）和《和我在一起》（2005） 等作品享誉国际，在多个电影节上获奖，成为新加坡和亚洲电影界最具影响力的才华电影人之一。邱金海的作品多展示当代新加坡人的心理疏离感和怀旧之情，塑造的反英雄角色能看­出马丁·斯科塞斯作品的影响。《我的魔法》是他在预算非常紧张的情况下仅用12天便完成的电影，但在此前已酝酿了整整十年。

　　邱金海说：《我的魔法》确实是我最个人化的电影。我是一个父亲，有四个儿子。很长时间以来，我都想要去探讨父子之间的关系，以及可能会干预到这种关系的种种障碍，并且还有­无论发生什么危险的情况，如何能够保持这种关系继续下去等等这些问题。

　　邱金海的灵感来自Cormac Mac Carthy所著的《路》（The Road），其中同样讲述的父子之间的故事，关于一个后启示性的苦难。邱金海创造了一个吞火杂技师傅Francis Bosco的父亲角色，自从他的妻子离开他之后，他的生活就结束了原有的状态，他十岁的儿子应付着突然而来的孤独，父子关系随之出现巨大的问题，最终Francis决定重­操旧业，再次成为了一个变戏法的艺人。

　　谈到如何让非专业演员胜任角色，邱金海说：让演父子的两个人之间感觉表演的舒适，这对于我来说是重要的工作，饰演儿子的Jathis有着不可思议的天赋。而作为父亲的Bo­sco，他亲自做了许多魔术的场面，他完全是在拒绝任何形式的表演。因为我们很小心地保护两位演员的特点。事实上正是因为演员方面的顺利，我们只拍摄了九天，感谢我们的优­秀团队，难以置信地严格遵守着时间表。我总在想这部电影是小巧而精致的，我不想它有任何的过度感或者有意的铺张。这对于我想要电影保持它的微妙与隐私感来说，是十分重要的­。

I was supposed to write a response essay to this film for my Singapore Study module. But I cried and cried after I watched it. Even when there were two girls just sitting at the same desk facing me, I couldn't stop my tears.
