This is a scratch built Sidewinder style model rocket flying on a pair of Estes "E" motors. The flight is quite exciting and at one point, incredibly realistic looking!

  • How'd you get 2 engines to ignite at once? I tried this so many times but my igniter wouldn't allow me to. I even tried using a Car battery and still it didn't ignite :(

  • @TheApana I made a parallel adapter (Simple Y harness) and used a car battery with the normal Estes ignitors. I have another rocket (triple cluster) and this method works perfect for it also.

  • The "weathervaning" was because your rocket was over stable. This is because your center of pressure and center of gravity were way off. I suggest downloading the free version of RockSim. You just put your rocket design in and it finds the cp and cg and you can adjust parts such. I use this because i don't have the money to keep buying E engines. I design and run a simulation flight and I fix what needs to be fixed then i build my rocket. It's much cheaper than wasting engines and having to was

not long after launching it, I actually loaded it up to openrocket sim. I did find out it was over stable. I never had a chance to fix it because on its third launch, it landed in a bunch of trees. :( I have a good idea of where it is, but still can't locate it. It sure was fun to watch it fly though!

  • What kind of camera were you using?

  • @aviationmanSam Just a key chain camera that I bought off of ebay

  • Awsome vid!

  • @TheApana same here

  • @CanItBeDone11 No it was because he had GIGANTIC fins up front so it tries to behave more like an airplane than a rocket hence why it did not weathervane it LOOPED 360" + and then damned near glided down sans chute. (common problem with "sidewinder" style missiles. they are intended to be damned near unstable to make them damned hard to evade :-) ie they can turn tighter than you can usually :-)

Cut down the size of those fins up top or increase the size of the lower ones to reduce this.

  • Well, Thats what men says Overstable
