Show notes: Another writing exercise. Right down a name and write down everything that name brings to mind. What is that person like? What do they look like? Do they laugh a lot. Names are in danger of sounding passe. Names like fashion go in and out of style. Names that were dumb when I was a kid now seem like really cool names. If your working on a story that takes place far in the future or in another part of the universe and are not names used here and now, look at the origins of names here. Last names are often from locations of occupations. Native Americans name from things they see in their environment. Names that are unusual will soon not seem unusual any more. Look at the name: River Phoenix. When we hear that name we don't thing of a resurrecting bird or a river. Hokie names can be used for character that are not hokie at all. Look at the name Earnest, then think of Earnest Hemingway. The different names you are considering can have many different possibilities. One name can hint at a character trait that will become more apparent later in the store. Think of the reasons your character's names are effective in the story. If you want to make a character who is way-out-there maybe choose a name that will surprise the reader. The name should also be rooted in the character. If the character comes from a stable family they will probably have a name that reflects that. Homeless people often don't go by their legal names but have names like Turtle and Starlight. In choosing a name you want some characters to fade into the background and others to stand out. You can use interesting names to call attention to the characters you want the reader to pay attention to. Write down the name of a fictional character you have read and write down the reasons you think the writer chose to use that name. A name says many things at once and first impressions are important in fiction and the character's name is a big part of the first impression.
Creative writing/ storytelling tutorial for the multimedia age. The writing strategies offered in these tutorials can also be applied to podcasting, film work, storyboarding, cartooning, etc. but they are still very much about writing. Writing is an important skill for most kinds of multimedia artists.
