Paramedic students from seven NEMSA sites recently participated in a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill at NEMSA headquarters in Lafayette. Students and educational coordinators came in from Hessmer, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Houma, Baton Rouge, Convington, and Gretna.
Although an MCI can be anything that overwhelms the resources of the responding crews, the general public more commonly recognizes events such as building collapses, train and bus collisions, earthquakes and other large-scale emergencies as mass causality incidents. Events such as the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the Olympic bombing in Atlanta in 1996, the Metrolink train collision in Los Angeles in 2008 and the Metro train collision in Washington D.C. in 2009 are well publicized examples of mass casualty incidents.
