When you put your chains on, the open sides of the cross chain hooks should face away from the tire. Also, the hooks on the end of the chains are called (a) fold back hook and (b) fingertip hook. The fold back hook goes to the outside of the tire. Hook the fingertip hook first, then the fold back hook last. It goes through one of the links and folds back and should lock under the chain. I've never had a problem with my chains coming off. You might pick yourself up a pair of chain tensioners.
