@mvolesky1 In the Canadian army we cannot afford to lose a mortar tube so after waiting 30min we gently turn the tube upside down take the round and dispose of the round.
@sanfranciscobay Yep, the whole mortar tube gets carried (carefully) to a pre-dug "dud pit" that is present at the mortar range and placed horizontally into the pit. EOD then places explosives on the mortar tube and blows the round, tube and all. Since the tube is carried nearly horizontally (muzzle slightly up so the round doesn't fall out), and the selector is put on safe retracting the firing pin, the chances of the round firing after the several attempts to intentionally fire it are slim.
@sanfranciscobay No, its an IDF (indirect fire weapon). Not sure if you could hold onto the thing. I only fired it a couple of times during some cross training with our mortar section, just incase they got smoked we could pick it up and continue to employ it. I'm pretty sure our 155mm arty can direct fire though.
@mjobanion9 "Its there so you can employ the weapon during an assault." Are you saying the mortar has a trigger so you can fire it in the level position if necessary, to keep the bad guys away?
@mvolesky1 Are you saying after trying method 1 and 2, you pick the tube up and put it in a pit? What happens if it fires when you're carrying it to the pit? If you put it in a pit, do you leave it in the same position with the open end upwards? What if there's no pit to put it in?
@chersterfieldblutch its nothing dangerous a misfire. I've had it many times, just try to fire it again. if it doesnt go off just come back in a few minutes if hot barrel. the scary part is pulling out a bomb that wont fire at all.
What's amazing here is that they are calm and professionnal when most people would not even dare to get close of this mortar. That how you see the difference between a soldier and a normal people.

It's not that I'm absolutly amazed, it's just that I find it reavelant of the difference between a professionnal soldier and a normal people.
No more, no less.
It's possible that I was misunderstood or that my english is not so good, but since it's not my primary language...
