There are also many Nawar in Egypt; many of the women have traditionally been ghawazi, public entertainers in the villages, primarily dancers. (To my knowledge, the Nawar Mazin family of Luxor has had at least 15 ghawazi since the 1940s.) The terms ghawazi and Nawar have a rather bad connotation in Egypt, and the Nawar are discriminated against. Many Nawar women have recently married non-Nawar men, and most of the younger Nawar have forgotten their language. -- Edwina Nearing

The Dom people of the Middle East are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group, a large group of the Dom people hide their ethnic identity by declaring themselves to be Lebanese by nationality.

The Regions with the significant populations of the Dom people in the

Middle east are: Turkey, Greece, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus and Kuwait.

We know that the Dom people have settlements across the entire Lebanese land as well as across the entire Middle East, and not only in Southern Lebanon.
