I usually don't post videos about films, but "Wizards" has always been a great favorite of mine and to my mind a classic. Bakshi was far beyond his time. I wanted to share it with you all. I hope those of you who have never seen it will be intrigued enough by my "trailer" to go out and hunt down a copy.

The following commentary is from Wikipedia.

After Fritz The Cat Bakshi turned away from race and cultural issues and began producing fantasy films. His first was Wizards in 1976. Bakshi ran into trouble when he was unable to complete the battle sequences with the budget 20th Century Fox had given him, and the studio refused to raise his funds, resulting in Bakshi having to use his own money to fund the production, using rotoscoping for the battle sequences, which borrowed live-action material taken directly from World War II stock footage and feature films. In 1977, the film was released and received with great acclaim.

The film is an allegorical comment on the moral neutrality of technology and the potentially destructive powers of propaganda. Blackwolf's secret weapon is propaganda, used to incite and motivate his legions and terrorize the good fairy folk of Montagar; Blackwolf also utilizes technology for evil ends. However, in the end, it is Avatar's willingness to use a technological tool which saves them all.

  • i am a big fan of wizards! was one of the first animated movies that got me hooked to animation - liked his lord of the rings as well - i believe Jack borrowed a lot of his LOTR costumes from bakshi

  • I was fascinated by animation when I saw this movie, too... what especially fascinated me were the very unique styels and non traditional effects that were used.

  • this is one of the best animated movies ever

and this is a fine tribute to it, good work my friend =D

  • Its hard to appreciate this film knowing that it's style was stolen from a very talented artist in the opportunistic moment of his untimely death and that his son's lawsuits came too late to effect the production of this cartoon. RIP Vaughn Bode.
