Thanks for posting this - I'm a big fan of John's and have seen him play live in a small folk club in Wales. An absolute treat, both the concert and also meeting him.
I've posted a few videos of his here on YouTube - take a look if you like.
Hi John ! (in the hope that, as posted, you still check these comments). The promoter referred to was one Dave Walsh. There's an old b/w photo of him meeting you off the train at Wiesbaden. Just google - "John James wird auf dem Wiesbadener Bahnhof von Dave Walsh abgeholt" and then click on "nostalgie". It's actually quite a good photo .....
OH...MY...GOD!!! I knew this guy....but apparently didn't know him at all...if that makes sense. :O I can't believe I found this! He is really funny and a nice guy and soooo laid back, lol. I will say no more. John, if you read this, this just makes you even more cool than I thought you were anyway. That's a real talent you've got there...... :-/ !
.. still pulling out all his stops in such spectacular fashion. Wizz Jones was also a visitor at the same venue, around the same period. I recall that he played a blinding set which included a number or two from the illustrious Dan Hicks. Both gigs were arranged by a small time promoter whom we all knew as, Dave "The Mancunian", another ex-pat like ourselves, who was also later responsible for organising a tour of Germany and Belgium for Davy Graham who played some gigs in Wiesbaden and Mainz.
I remember seeing John play ( the only occasion, sadly, on which I ever saw him) in a little bar, Das Domizil, in Wiesbaden, Germany, back in the autumn of 1977. It was a very enjoyable and memorable night. He was joined on the small stage for a couple of numbers by a young English jazz fiddle player whose name I can no longer recall. Together they worked their magic on an appreciative crowd of locals and ex-pat Brits, amongst whom I was numbered at the time. It's great to see that John is ..
The brilliant John James has agreed to put on a show at Rugby Cultural Festival in July this year (2011) - tickets and details available by phoning 01788 535020 or emailing soundsmusic@hotmail.com.
