This video will show you how time signatures work out in music. There are two numbers in time signatures: the top number and the bottom number. The bottom number represents the 'type of note' used as the 'beat' (so to say) of a measure, and the top number identifies how many of them there are in a measure.

An example would be the common time: 4 | 4, which would be shorthand for 'four quaters within a measure.'

Here are the numberings used:
1 - Whole note (Semibreve)
2 - Half note (Minim)
4 - Quater note (Crotchet)
8 - Eighth note (Quaver)
16 - Sixteenth note (Semiquaver)

Normally in music, each type of note represents a 'duration' in which a note is 'played.' For example, a half note would play for two beats (4|4).

Common time refers to the '4|4' time signature, and a crossed 'C' would represent a '2|2.'

I mention the term 'beat' at times in this video. A beat is generally a nickname for a 'crotchet,' so when we say 'quater of a beat,' we just mean 'quater of a crotchet note.'

The two tracks used in this video are 'Melonry City,' and 'Standing Tall,' both of which can be found on my alternative channel ( http://youtube.co.uk/kurtismedia ).
