Rich with copper and mining resources, Zambia has been ranked recently by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, as one of Africa`s great economic successes. In fact, it is now ranked as one of the world`s newest middle income economies rising up from its previous status as a developing economy. The country's credit rating now at a B+, has even been listed as one of the 10 best performing economies.
With the number of economic reform measures that have taken place in Zambia, coupled with relative political stability (the country has also known 50 years of peace and stability), the Zambian economy has maintained steady economic expansion averaging about 6 percent over the past five years. The financial sector has benefited from reforms, including implementation of the Financial Sector Development Plan. Despite the challenging environment, the sector has weathered the global financial turmoil relatively well. Management of public finance has been sound. Zambia is one of Sub-Saharan Africa's most highly urbanized countries.
