The Yamaha DX7 is one of my alltime favourite synthesizers. It's a masterpiece.

The GREY MATTER E! expansion for the Yamaha DX7 II is very useful. For example, you can put many parameters to the CS1 and CS2 sliders, to control them at any time. Also it has a pattern sequencer, arpeggiator, more patch memories, and 8 different patches can be played at one time (like on the TX802). A great machine...

I played it with a Yamaha ProR3 (reverb) and Roland DEP-5 (delay).

  • Greetings! Loved the video and I'm pretty much impressed of what you can do with the Grey Matter E expansion. Luckily I found an half priced DX7II on eBay and luckily I'm gonna get it in a few days. By the way, is it true that the sound is more clean than on the original DX7?

    Greetings from Italy.

  • @Xevious76 thanks! My statement: yes, the DX7 II has the cleaner sound - but not the better sound. The original DX7 has more character and it is easier to program - although the display is smaller. If I must choose, I would take the original DX. I don't need microtuning, pan, layer or split functions. I want the best basic sound.

  • What are the patches you are playing? Where did you get them? Or did you create them? I wish there were a place to get create patches without having to spend days going through thousands of so-so ones. Oh-- great video!!! Love your playing and the expressive textures you are getting.

  • @iritethesongs The patches are factory presets from the original ROM cartridge, which I modified life in the video.

  • The best of them all is the DX7S. It has the same sound quality as the II D-----II FD. But because it maintains mono like the orginal DX7 packs more punch. The inclusion of the POLY UNISON MODE also makes the mark 2 models VASTLY superior to the original DX7. They now have the sonic power to MATCH ANY ANALOGUE. Plus that cutting in your face presence their metallic nature gives. But make no mistake about it. The DX7 MK 2 can do strings as good as a JP8 too. My demo TIMETRAVELLER will show this.

  • Please good sir, give me a sysex file for the patch you play from 4:25. Amazing pad sound.

  • i just recently got the e! card for my DX7IIFD. i've noticed in the installation that it calls for having a memory cartridge to initialize the software. is the cartridge required for installation?

  • Nice video..thanks for posting!

  • Simple Q: How do I get my DX7iiFD to "PLAY" from the installed grey matter card?

FYI: I bought my DX7IIFD for $20 and soldered in a new Batt holder and put in the CS2032 Batt....Works great!

  • I use DX7 and DX21 and Tx81z after 1985 to 1998!... But DX1 it's a dream ! Martignat.L

  • I own almost every DX and TX synth from Yamaha... but the DX7 MKI sounds best... but i love to use the DX7 IIFD for basses....

  • @CoolColJ24 yes they do have a BC input on the lower left corner of the keyboard under the mod wheels next to the headphone output.

    Myself I have a KX88, DX7 IID, 3 DMP-11 rack mixers and 2 TX-816 and a RX-5 drum machine..

All the stuff I wanted as a kid but couldn't afford but got thanks to online auctions. Have spent some time refurbishing the DMP-11 and the TX power supplies though and a couple input OP amps on the DMP-11 due to feedback. One TX for strings and one for brass= big sound.
