Carlos worked at a car wash and body shop on the Southwest Side for 11 years, working about 70 hours most weeks. He lost the majority of one of his thumbs in an accident in the shop.

While cleaning cars, he and his co-workers were never paid an hourly wage—they were only paid tips. This meant that some days, if business was slow, he made as little as $15 total for 12 hours of work. Even on days when tips were good, they never received an amount equal to the minimum wage—to say nothing of overtime.

Arise has made multiple attempts to reach out to the business's owner to discuss the matter, but he has been unresponsive. Paying workers below the minimum wage and refusing to pay overtime is illegal and immoral. Carlos and a group of supporters are returning to his former employer to demand that he be paid what he is owed, gathering outside holding squeegees and giant sponges.
