They are not fed before arriving at the bedside, which is why they are highly perishable (that is, they are starving). Some manufacturers (Monarch Labs) feed them sterile, artificial diets that will keep them alive longer, but not allow them to grow or mature.

I am curious how the maggots are sterilized. What do they feed on before being applied to a client.
