For the past few years I have been in and out of Thailand... it wasn't just the amazing food and culture that pulled me back, but my love for the thai-burma border area and the people I met there.
I've been volunteering with various organisations in Mae Hong Son, Mae Sot, and Ban Tha Song Yang, with Burmese, Thai, Shan, and Karen ethnic minorities. Giving service is and will always be when I feel most at peace and humble. If you're in Thailand and want a different experience, do some research into volunteer work.. there are PLENTY of opportunities where you DON'T have to pay ! Also, you may think that you're useless to these people but I can say with some confidence "You don't even know how much you have to give!!"
Thanks to a kind soul in the states, I was able to buy lots of good quality educational and sports equipment for youth groups in the refugee camps, and Safe Haven Orphanage (http://safehavenorphanage.org/). Another contact in the UK held a fundraising night and the money he's raised will go towards buying some guitars and materials for a school in Mae Sot run by an ex-political prisoner who is a hero in the Burmese Community. If you visit Mae Sot, please visit Knowledge Zone and ask for Thet Naing. Donate what you can.. teach at the school or give money/materials.
A good organisation which could help you find a suitable placement is http://burmavolunteers.org/ (3 months commitment minimum)
