ANCHOR:
And a Paris-based international organization calls for French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and other government heads to boycott the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
STORY:
Reporters Without Borders, is an international organization that defends journalists' freedom to report. The Paris-based group managed to disrupt the Olympic torch lighting ceremony when one of their members carried a black banner with five interlocked handcuffs in the pattern of the Olympic rings.
After arriving back from Greece, Robert Menard, the Secretary-General
of the group said they are not asking the athletes to boycott the games.
[Robert Menard, Reporters Without Borders]:
"We are not asking the athletes not to go to Peking. We are definitely not asking them for this. Every athlete has to do as he wants according to his own conscience. But what we are demanding is for the heads of states and governments, and here in France, Mr. Sarkozy, we are asking them today that if the situation doesn't improve in Tibet and the rest of China, that they will not be present at the opening ceremony on the 8th of August for the Olympic Games."

Vincent Brossel, from the Pacific-Asia desk for Reporters Without Borders, arriving with Menard, said that he would continue protests up until the start of the Games.

  • To the joe...guy: your twisted logic is: We can do whatever we want. No matter how guilty we are, no matter what awful evil crimes and sins we've committed or are still committing, we can still claim ourselves as the moral authority in the world. Does your twisted mind really think that majority people in the world will accept your crap?

  • I think e point is tat if French & British invaders did actually do so much evil deeds & human rights crimes themselves, they r really in no position 2 criticize China-Tibet issue, especially when Tibet is part of China. Even if China committed human rights crimes, that was 60s-early 80s period. Today, USA & other countries committed human rights crimes 2 in vietnam war, & mass genocide in IRAQ 2. Why dun u ppl complain abt them? Instead of hypocritically focusing only on China-tibet issues?

  • let them be, stupid french guys. dirty political guys.

  • Who gives you the rights to tell what others should act and think? Should I tell you how you should make love with your wives? MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. Do you knwo how much resource that France and Britan have stolen from China in the past 150 years? How many Chinese people have been killed by the French and British invaders? Where were the human rights there?

  • trist pr la france davoir une personne comme ca, si con, robert,

  • Please, when you are boycotting The 2008 Olympic Games, you are taking away 140 million people's pride and happiness.

Learn what Olympic is before you disturb its purity.

  • Nothing and no one can stop the rise of China anymore. To resist or use the Dalai Lama is futile and stupid. Live with it!

  • Paris based RSF was founded by Robert Menard, the self-styled "General Secretary" of the supposedly independent non-governmental group.

  • RSF is anything but unbiased however and receives its funding from a variety of government sources including the US State Department and Ronald Reagan's National Endowment for Democracy, whose officers read like a who's who of neoconservatism and include nearly all of the signers of the "Project for a new American Century."

  • RSF was banned by the United Nations in 2003 and kept away from its sessions on "human rights" because of its political activities. Through its financial contributer, TECRO (Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office), RSF is organizing a boycott of the Beijing Olympics. RSF is a font of anti-China news stories of dubious credibility.
