*[For Robby63]

I've been doing more covers lately; I think covers must be the secret to bringing people in here on Youtube. My favorite cover artist on here (who I'd very much like to Marry one day) is Matthew Luke Sandoval. For years, his performances have been inspiring me to put myself out here more and more. I'm trying to build a good portfiolio of original material (which is the point, right? I mean, if you're a writer--it's the original stuff you want people to embrace), but I think that I need to do more covers because that's often the first thing that captures my attention with a good artist; when you know the song, you can analyze from someone's interpretation whether or not you connect with their style. Listening to music is like interpersonal chemistry; it's either there, or it isn't. I hope, for you, it is. And I thank you for watching. I offer you my heart in exchange.

That being said, when Robby asked me to do a cover of this song, I was VERY hesitant. I am a total Toriphile; so thinking of the already amazing cover by Tori Amos on the Leonard Cohen tribute album, "Tower Of Song," I was pretty definite I'd never touch this song. Then, I remember seeing Matthew Luke Sandoval's version which closely mimics Tori's version but is beautiful and - well, again, I intend to Marry him in this life or the next... But I didn't think I could bring anything new to the song using the same medium (piano) that they did.

But Robby's been such a huge supporter and source of encouragement, I flipped on the KORG and threw caution to the wind. I was surprised, shocked even, what language the old Korgie started whispering into the thin night air. Something of a rhythm I'd never envisioned this song in. I'm not patting myself on the back here, I'm just saying that Robby was really on to something. This song, though it's been done before, really connected with me.

How can any Leonard Cohen song not connect with someone? This song is just liquid poetry. It oozes out of every pore when you really start it up; his music is so transcendent. If you've not seen the documentary, "I'm Your Man," I HIGHLY recommend it. What a legend, what a spirit. My personal favorite is watching Antony perform "If It Be Your Will" (look it up here on Youtube)

Alright. Enough chattering. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Robby, for your support and friendship. And thank you to everyone else--you all have become a family and you've all captured my heart. I offer anything I can to you with peace and humility.

Sincerely,
M Woolfrey

  • I only wish this was available for purchase. Such a sadly beautiful interpretation. Your passion is palpable, your longing almost touchable. Remarkable. If you don't have a recording contract you should. Cheers, and THANK you for sharing this darkly lovely piece.
