The reason Naomi Watts acting seems awful in the beginning is because the first 2/3rds is a dream sequence essentially. Her acting seems great near the end because that's supposed to be her actual reality.

I agree with how BLEAK and exclusive Hollywood is to certain kinds of people the movie seems to be. I also agree that the movie represents only ONE dream. The movie has A LOT OF open-ended nuances (the blue box, the Cowboy and Coco character, the dream sequence [either at the beginning or the end of the film] , whether or not a murder occurred. Great, but flawed review.
You really need to watch this film a dirty dozen more times before you review this exclusive, sophisticated film.

The only way this film won't make sense is if the viewer isn't really paying attention. The plot is straight forward. It's just not spoon fed to the viewer in a linear fashion. The acting is exaggerrated at the beginning because it's a dream sequence. The acting is fantastic towards the end because it's after the dream ends and it's representative of reality. Great film.

naomi watts is intentionally acting badly in her first scenes. this is diane's interpretation of herself as this perfect actress. once she gets to the audition scene you realize that watts is a great actress, she can do a lot of diverse things, acting badly as betty, acting brilliantly as betty playing someone else and acting haggard and strung out as diane. i think lynch also dubbed the dialogue in the airport scene to make it sound more stilted, so it was all intentional.

It was nice to see at least one (somewhat) negative view of the film! I really love it but I can see why its not for everyone.

Good point, there's lots to take from this film but at the same time I am satisfied with my own conclusion. Thanks for the kudos!

I know this film has many layers, interpretations and perspectives and hearing others thoughts are great, but forming your own is the best result. if it's too much 'homework' for the viewer, I think they should just walk away. It shouldn't take that much effort.
You really made me laugh here. I loved the movie -- I think it's my all time favourite, but it's maddening trying to explain it to other people (not that I can explain it to myself). Cheers
PS: Did you check out "Inland Empire"? :D

Inland Empire? I must have completely forgotten, I'll add to my "must see" list...and now I DO have a list so I should see it eventually=D
