I'm aware there are a few versions of Ramey singing Zaccaria's "Oh, chi piange" on YT already but it's always fascinating to watch him onstage.

1995 Paris
Conductor Pinchas Steinberg
Directed by Robert Carsen

I think it's only an F2. verdi wrote for very high basses. verdi knew the voices he wrote for well and demanded only within the natural limits of the singers meant to sing his music (a basso cantante cannot be expected to project C2 above heavy orchestration)

  • Nabucco, Atilla, Macbeth, Falstaff, Riggoletto, Simon Bocanegra, Posa; Verdi sure loved his basses and baritones. he wrote more leads for them than for tenors (not to mention better music). Verdi and Rossini are the two composers who perhaps more than all the others knew how to capture the richness of lower voices.

  • the one and only sam ramey-his voice makes my heart sing!

  • the best ever!
