How to Temporarily Repair a Leaking Roof -- Tips to Keep the Rain Out
In older homes, it can be difficult to avoid having a roof leak from time to time. This can even be true in new homes, if the rain is particularly heavy or if there has been damage to the roof that you are unaware of. In any case, the leak could be problematic in that it might cause damage to the contents of your home within if you don't take some basic steps to learn how to temporarily repair a leaking roof. While the storm is raging, you cannot fix the roof permanently, but you can certainly use one of these ideas to stop the leak from damaging your property. There are three main ways that you can do this.
The first way that is commonly accepted as how to temporarily repair a leaking roof is to patch it up. From the interior of the house, you can create an emergency patch. However, you will first need to find out where the leak is coming from exactly. Once you have found that hole, you can use a product called roof patch or any other sort of putty to plug in the hole. Be sure to be generous in your application of this putty, because if the rain continues to fall at a rapid rate it could wash away your repairs after you have retired for the evening.
A second way to temporarily repair your roof would be to craft a temporary shingle. It's the job of roof shingles under normal circumstances to take care of any water on top of the home, and divert this water onto the ground. While the storm is still brewing, you could create the shingles out of sheet metal. Again, this will first require that you find out where the water is coming from, so that you can maneuver your temporary shingle on top of the damaged one. Simply by sliding the sheet metal underneath the shingles that are directly above the damaged one, you will be able to prevent more water from entering the home.
Finally, it's possible to figure out how to temporarily repair a leaking roof by diverting the water in another way. Drive a nail through the hole that the water is entering from, and then place a bucket right underneath where this hole is. You can collect the water and prevent it from reaching any other areas of the home. After the storm has passed, you can then call the professional to come make more permanent repairs.
