I was just given this firearm in 30-30win. It was made in 1916. It's in really wonderful shape! Any ideas how much it would be worth? Just wondering, id never sell it.

He forgot the 25-35 caliber. It was actually in production much longer than the 38-55 and 32-40. In 1919-1920, the designation was changed from Winchester Model 1894 to just Winchester Model 94. Model 94 was discontinued when the U.S. factory was shut down in 2006.
There are quite a few 100 year old Winchester Model 1894s around, that still shoot as good as any new gun. They are a testament to the quality of manufacturing that was Winchester, "the gun that won the west".

@Leibstantarde Yes, the 38-55 Winchester ammo is available as well as the 30-30 and 32 Winchester Special. The 32-40 Winchester is available from time to time on special runs. But you canbuy any of the brass and reload it yourself.

I've never owned a lever action rifle. Historically, if one found him/herself in a combat situation, could he/she "top off" the tubular magazine, with a chambered round just above?

The saddle ring is actually used when you put your gun in the scabbord. Your scabbord is attached to the saddle, and by merely putting your gun in, it runs the risk of falling out as the horse moves. So you tie the gun in to your scabbord, using the saddle ring and it keeps it secure.
