Excerpt from faculty recital of Mark Pair, Professor Emeritus and Artist-in-residence at Wayland Baptist University, on March 25, 1985. Mark Pair was known for giving gargantuan recitals twice a year covering one of the largest solo piano repitoire I have encountered. He performed over 50 faculty recitals in his tenure at Wayland and they were always cyclical or thematic. As vast and masterly as his piano performances were, he was also as much a master as piano instructor and music theorist, and was contented to develop his artistry at a small university in west Texas in almost total obscurity. I was very fortunate to be under his tutaledge and am convinced I could not have recieved a better rounded and in depth experience in advance musical studies had I attended one of the famous conservatories as did several friends and collegues chose to do. This particular performance featured ten Liszt transcriptions and to my knowledge this is the only video tap of any of Mr. Pair's recitals of which the only copy is in my possession.

  • The greatest teacher I've ever studied under. I remember his giggle more than anything else.

  • Thank you so much for this video. It brings back such memories. I, also was a student of Mr. Pair. Phenomenal memory-artistry-brilliant voicing. Yet he was one of the most humble and gentle people I have ever known. I totally agree with the background information you posted. Thanks again.

  • Very good. Very musical. Reminds me of Bolet's recording for the film A Song to Remember. Just needs to be more secure.
