It was the watersons that got me back into folk music and songs after a break of near 20 years . we sung Hal and tow in a mummers play we did in open door theater co. we were doing "The Fool" by Edward Bond.
Listening to this wonderful song and performance put me onto Sacred Harp and "shape-note" singing from the American church. Fantastic stuff, and one of the great things about youtube is that it lcan ink you to other performers/styles
I hadn''t heard of the Watersons before, and discovered this while looking for something else here. Outstanding! I'll be getting acquainted with a lot more of their work. Thanks for posting.

Absolute magic. The greatest English folk group ever.
I became a fan in the 1960's and now YouTube has rekindled my interest. A thousand thanks you's to all the contributors. Brilliant.

For many years I thought this was a gospel song, and sang it as such. Only recently found out that it was presumed to be an English Civil war song
