I agree with sourteeth. In addition, Ryuichi once wrote in his poem that eyes are people's weakest but most unforgettable part. Therefore, eyes became his "center". In another interview I read long time ago he said he doesn't like that intense gaze he use to have before because it makes him look like a panda. (LOL)

FYI, Ryu does not even smoke cigarettes. He's quite into sports & fitness.

Ryu took that gaze from his favorite singer/band, Morrie, from Dead End. Hence, why Ryu looks so much alike Morrie in his early visualkei style days.
