Hmm.. you got me stumped here. Couldn't find any good information about that, but there are many different defense mechanisms with the moth and larvae. So it could be. However another option is that it's digestive fluids for some other kinds of food.
Have you tried smelling it? If it smells bad, it might be a defense.

What do you mean by spitting? As in spewing liquid on your hands? Never held a moth so can't really say.
