Southern Airways Flight 242

Southern Airways Flight 242 was a DC-9-31 jet, registered N1335U, that executed a forced landing on a highway in New Hope, Paulding County, Georgia, United States after suffering hail damage and losing power on both engines in a severe thunderstorm on April 4, 1977.[2]

At the time of the accident, the aircraft was flying from Huntsville, Alabama to Atlanta, Georgia. Sixty-two people on the aircraft (including the flight crew) and eight people on the ground died; 20 passengers survived, as well as the two flight attendants; one passenger initially survived and died around one month later.

A memorial is being erected nearby. A group of people in the town of New Hope has worked very hard for the memorial. I have a photo of the plaque to be erected with all of the victims on the ground and on the plane as well as the survivors. There may be a good reason why they couldn't put it in the exact spot where the plane originally hit ground, or where the wings clipped Newman's, or where the plane broke apart in a gazillion pieces.

I went to the crash site yesterday 9/12/2011 and there is a Karate building where the crash happened. There was nothing to say where or when it happened! How sad that not even a sign or plaque has not been put anywhere for the great loss of life! Way to go New Hope!
